NFF Elections - Federal Government Intervenes And Calls For August 26 Elections

Elections into the executive committee of the Nigeria football federation will now be held on August 26 in Abuja as earlier scheduled despite the NFF proposing a shift in date and venue, which they expected the ordinary congress to ratify also on August 26, but in Warri, Delta State.

The NFF led by Aminu Maigari had earlier issued a statement on Thursday saying that there would be no elections on the said date of August 26, but just the ordinary congress to ratify their proposal of moving the date and reconstituting the electoral committee.

General Secretary Musa Amadu was quoted as saying in the statement:  “As far as the NFF is concerned, there will be no elections at the General Assembly of Tuesday, 26th August. There is a proposal that we are taking to the General Assembly (the supreme body of Nigeria football) for consideration and approval, with regards to the elections.

“It is for the NFF and the General Assembly to propose the date for elections, not that of the Electoral Committee, which was put in place by the General Assembly.”

The Aminu Maigari-led NFF subsequently wrote to FIFA to seek approval to their proposal and a FIFA response read in part: “We take note of the decision of the NFF Executive Committee to ask the members of the upcoming congress on 26 August 2014 to consider a new roadmap for the elections, which should be held by no later than two weeks after the congress.”

But with the electoral committee’s insistence on holding the elections on August 26, the NFF sought intervention from the federal government and had a meeting with the Secretary to the Nigerian government, Anyim Pius Anyim on Friday, with the intervention being that the elections must be held as originally planned on August 26.

Meanwhile, sl10 have confirmed that Aminu Maigari, who didn’t submit his election form earlier, has failed to do so and will not be contesting for the position of president of the Nigeria football federation, or any other positions in the NFF.

Also, technical committee chairman Christopher Green has failed to pick up a form, and will not be on the next executive committee. Reliable sources informed sl10 that Green was hoping to become the next General Secretary, if Maigari had contested and won.
